New York Fashion Week Day 1: Frida, Feathers, French Braids, and Frills

This look came together so organically, it was magical. This was my Day 1 look for New York Fashion Week. I had a full day of shows so I wore this look during the day. It was a beautiful 50 degrees in February so I could have my legs out which was a wonderful surprise. Before I go into what I am wearing in the pictures I want to talk about something that is really important to me.

It was brought to my attention recently that the Fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world. I heard from a blogger the fashion industry was the second most polluting industry and then after further research discovered it is more like the fifth or sixth most polluting industry. In my efforts to keep my consumption to a minimum I am reserving my consumption to thrifted and second hand pieces. I went to a wonderful show during New York Fashion Week, Fashion for Peace that was really amazing. All of the pieces were created from natural fiber material. I recently did a bunch of research on the difference between natural vs. synthetic fiber and holy WOW. I have so much to share with you all about what I have learned but I am going to save that for later. In short, natural fiber clothings i.e. cotton, silk, cashmere, linen, wool etc. are not only a better investment, better for your health but also biodegradable and therefore better for the environment. I have now become more conscious because of Sadguru Jaggi Vasudev, a world renowned yogi, mystic, and author, the speaker at the Fashion for Peace show of the importance of limiting clothing consumption but also the kind of clothes I consume. Something more to work on in the future in an industry that I love so dearly. I'm a fashion fiend y'all but I am just as eco-friendly and care about leaving this planet in a better place than I was born into.

Now onto details about the look. I have to start with the Frida Kahlo earrings that were the biggest hit at Fashion week. I have never received more compliments from a diverse group of people than I did wearing these earrings. I bought these wonderful handmade Frida earrings in Cartagena, Colombia at an artisanal fair. The lovely woman who created these earrings said it takes her a full day to make one earring. She was gentle sweet and kind and I'm kicking myself that I lost her business card and info from my trip a year ago to Colombia. If I find out her name and info I will for sure update this post. I decided to create an outfit around the earrings. I picked up this feather skirt at Crossroads Trading Co., along with this light linen cropped blouse. I created the illusion of the two pieces being one with my favorite belt from Acne Studios that I picked up at Beacons Closet. I completed the look with my favorite Oxford Broads from Die Liam Hua from Beacons Closet as well.

I had a night time show and post show cocktails with some of the hottest celebrities in fashion and Hollywood so I altered my look a bit. I decided to take off the belt revealing this elegant crop top and some sexy midriff skin for a hotter look. I also put on my knee high Prada boots with thigh high socks to bring this look from a flirty fun look to a sexy night time look.
